Why you shouldn’t overlook data management

November 22, 2013

The value of data mining to organizations gets a lot of press these days. However, in order to make the most from that data, you need the business practices in place to help you collect and manage that data. That’s where Data Blueprint comes in, says Peter Aiken, Professor of Information Systems, Virginia Commonwealth University and author of ‘The Case for the Chief Data Officer’.

So, what are the skills necessary for organizations to make the most of their data? Beyond standard data management skills, you also need individuals with strong communication skills and the abililty to see cross-organizationally (particularly mixing business and IT skills).

When it comes to the value industry can bring to the academic space, Peter suggests that students feel very empowered when they get industry experience. Resources are also useful, including those delivered by IBM at the EdCon conference prior to Information On Demand.
