William McKnight, president of McKnight Consulting Group, is this week's IBM Big Data & Analytics Hero.
What is the market still missing for big data and analytics to really deliver ROI?
The market is missing pre-built big data applications.
Should tomorrow's generation acquire analytic skills, no matter the degree? Why or why not?
If they want to be ahead in business, yes. In the information age we are in, it's those with the ability to incorporate disparate information into decision processes that will get ahead.
Do you think big data and analytics will handle the data growth in 10–15 years, or will we need another shift in technology? Why?
After a pronounced innovation cycle, the technology is currently well ahead of the demand in the marketplace, although this is not necessarily true in every shop. We're in a period of consolidation now. It's hard to predict where we'll be on that curve in 10–15 years.
