There was no shortage of information about Informix and the Internet of Things at IBM Insight 2014. Multiple sessions from such speakers as Fred Ho, chief technologist for Informix Warehouse at IBM, and Lalitha Krishnamoorthy, program director for Informix engineering at IBM, covered everything from implementation, to data management, to what the future holds. With additional support from hands-on floor demos and visualizations, the Internet of Things was brought to life.

What a shame. Most businesses aren’t taking advantage of their data, leaving them hungry for success. According to Forrester Research analyst, Michele Goetz, only 12 percent of available data is used. If I am any good at math, that means there is a lot of data that is not being used.

This week’s Big Data &Analytics Hero, Leonardo Nantes, IT executive of Brazilian credit bureau Boa Vista Servicios, has faced numerous challenges since the merger of two companies took place a few years ago. Boa Vista now serves hundreds of thousands of clients nationwide and handles more than three million transactions per day. Since the business involves credit ratings and personal information, big data security and integrity are paramount.
