Most organizations are feeling the pressure to move big data initiatives past the discussion phase and toward well-planned projects. To what extent can a complete view of all of the available information help organizations gain deeper insights and make better decisions?

In the big data scheme of things, you can talk about the "3 Vs," the "4 Vs," or as many "Vs" as your fevered imagination can spin out. The "3 Vs" point to the "big" dimension of the big data phenomenon, but when you shift the focus from "big" data to "all" data, the fourth V becomes a cleaner fit. Specifically, bringing veracity into the discussion can help you to incorporate an overlapping database paradigm, NoSQL, into the larger perspective. That's because veracity is akin to one of the defining features of NoSQL: the notion of "eventual consistency."

There is all the buzz about Hadoop these days and its potential for replacing the enterprise data warehouse (EDW). The promise of Hadoop has been the ability to store and process massive amounts of data using commodity hardware that scales extremely well and at very low cost.

Quality-of-service (QoS) is one of the most paradoxical metrics in the telecommunications industry. “Quality” of the customer experience is normally measured through surveys and logged feedback, but plenty of data can lead to good quantitative measures.
