Data scientists: Hire an individual or team?

Length: 14:05
February 13, 2014

Most data science positions require a combination of technical and business skils. Gregory Piatetsky-Shapiro, the editor and publisher of KDnuggets.com, and a well-known expert in business analytics, data mining and data science, joined David Pittman to talk about that mix and the elusive “data scientist unicorn.” He also shared interesting findings from a poll he conducted on KDnuggets about what people look for when hiring data scientists. As his photo illustrates, he also demonstrated the evolution from data miners to data scientists.

Big data is all data

Length: 16:53
January 20, 2014

Mark Myers, market segment manager for IBM Watson Explorer, says the usual "3 V's" definition of big data is too narrow. "This way of looking at the issue limits big data to a technical challenge and misses what has become the real significance of big data: finding new ways to use data to create business value. To me, that is why I think big data is all data."

Listen to him explain the thinking behind this approach and give advice on how to begin getting more value out of your data. (Hint: it's easier than you may think.)

What happened to big data vertical applications?

Length: 9:35
December 30, 2013

In early 2013, one popular prediction was that vertical applications would rule the big data marketplace this year. Tom Deutsch took exception to that prediction in an article titled "Big Data’s Future: Bigger Than Just Vertical Applications" (read it at http://bit.ly/1hlXM5N ) So? Who was right? The person who made the original prediction or Deutsch, who said it was bunk?

We brought Deutsch back onto the show to hold him accountable and to look back on how the vertical applications market played out in 2013.
