Big Data & Analytics Heroes

David Vinson

Business Intelligence and Analytics Lead at Nike

David Vinson, business intelligence and analytics lead at Nike, believe that There’s a lot of new data out there—in fact, we now have access to data from the entire supply chain (from provisioning materials to build the shoe, to actually delivering the shoe on the dock, to selling the shoe). Big data and analytics is the wave of the future for Nike, but how do we take that data and make it really useful?

How have big data and analytics impacted how you do your job today?

There’s a lot of new data out there—in fact, we now have access to data from the entire supply chain (from provisioning materials to build the shoe, to actually delivering the shoe on the dock, to selling the shoe). Big data and analytics is the wave of the future for Nike, but how do we take that data and make it really useful?

Right now we’re trying to analyze our supply chain and see how we can get product to the customer—at the right place, at the right time—as well as track our products in our supply chain and maximize efficiency, resulting in less product loss.

What "gold nuggets" have you uncovered using big data and analytics?

Utilizing IBM Cognos as our engine we just started creating solutions that we're going to allow better insight into the data through analytics such as Cognos Business Intelligence Report Studio. Through Cognos workspace advance, we have all the different tools integrated to allow the individual planner to aggressively organize so that we can deliver the product to market faster, and more efficiently. What we’re really starting to see with these reports is that the data is more visual and it is easier to identify trends. To put that power into your hands and say "here's the data that I have now; what decisions do I need to make now that I have this data at my fingertips?" It gives the players more ammunition to validate their gut feeling.

How are big data and analytics changing your business strategy?

We are using the data generated throughout the supply chain, and using it in the most efficient ways, to maintain our competitive edge. Using data competitively add up to a faster, more profitable company.
