Closing the web app data security gap

Dynamic data masking for web applications

Demand Programs Professional, IBM

Last month hackers threatened employees of Sony Pictures Entertainment and their families. While the threat to private and public sector computer networks is ongoing, companies are scrambling to secure web application data to avoid being the next big headline.

Greater demand of data security regulations and increasingly stringent security with the design limitations of web applications have crippled organizations and their ability to respond. So why have organizations been unable to keep pace with changing data security demands for their web applications?

Closing-the-web-app_blog.pngAlthough most organizations have stringent security controls in place to protect production data in storage or in business use, sometimes that same data has been used for operations that are less secure. The issue is often compounded if these operations are outsourced and the organization has less control over the environment. One way to bridge the gap is with data masking, a method of creating a structurally similar but inauthentic version of an organization's data that can be used for purposes such as software testing and user training. The purpose is to protect the actual data while having a functional substitute for occasions when the real data is not required.

Today 43 percent of companies have suffered one data breach in the past year, and 60 percent say they’ve been struck by multiple breaches in the last two years, a new study finds. Those figures are up 10 percent from last year, according to a report released by the Ponemon Institute and sponsored by the credit bureau Experian.

What’s worse: As more security compromises make headlines for losing customer data (most recently Home Depot’s 56-million card breach, on the heels of J.P. Morgan and the infamous Target  hack), the majority of organizations say they might not be prepared for the consequences.

Guardiam for Applications provides an efficient and cost-effective solution to this growing data security gap. Leveraging dynamic data masking technology applied specifically to web applications, Guardium for Applications addresses the outstanding data security concerns of IT leaders, security professionals and regulatory bodies.
