Empowering business users with automated decision management

Enterprise Architect, Vallourec

When two companies merge, the synergy between them can result in deeper market penetration, a broader customer base, reduction of competition and more.

On the IT side of the house, the sum of the parts doesn’t necessarily make a better whole. How do you combine multiple back-end systems? How do you ensure that valuable data stored in multiple systems isn’t locked away?

Such was the case for Vallourec, a world leader in premium tubular solutions for energy markets. After a joint venture, it found that it had two separate order entry systems.

Consolidating decision management

In the energy sector, regulations and standards are constantly evolving, which means that the enterprises working in and around this industry must adapt quickly and frequently.

The complexity of products and the full integration of systems up to the production facilities require a flexible order management system, with decision-based configuration and validation.

To book orders for multiple complex products in its SAP ERP system, Vallourec needed a very high level of data quality.

The company decided to consolidate decision management in one common order entry system. It adopted ILOG BRMS, now known as IBM Operational Decision Manager (ODM), because it was already being used for another purpose in the company.

Consolidating and capturing knowledge

As a result of continued joint ventures and acquisitions during the last decade-plus, Vallourec has added many complex value systems to its IT landscape, which today serves five completely different business lines, each with its own set of products. With IBM ODM, the company has a way to make visible stored knowledge from these value systems. That information may otherwise have been locked away.

Business users can take ownership of and maintain thousands of rules and other artifacts to streamline workflows. The company captures knowledge before workers retire or leave the company. Business rules are stored, shared and governed within one central place with no duplication, enabling rapid decision management and adaptation to rapidly changing market conditions, minimizing compliance risk.

Ultimately, Vallourec counts on IBM ODM to support and add value to its end-to-end SAP ERP implementation.
