IBM positioned as a Leader in Gartner Magic Quadrant for Strategic CPM

IBM has earned a place in the Leader quadrant of the first-ever “Magic Quadrant for Strategic Corporate Performance Management Solutions,” published by the industry analysts at Gartner, Inc. IBM’s position is based on Gartner’s evaluation of IBM’s “completeness of vision” and “ability to execute.” We believe that this prestigious honor confirms IBM’s status as a force to be reckoned with in the performance management marketplace. In fact, out of only four vendors in the Leader quadrant, IBM is farthest to the right on the horizontal “Completeness of Vision” axis.

An evolution of the Magic Quadrant

Gartner’s new Magic Quadrant reflects the evolution of the corporate performance management (CPM) market into two segments: financial CPM (FCPM) and strategic CPM (SCPM). Gartner explained that “SCPM solutions support the office of finance's budgeting, planning and forecasting efforts. They also provide profitability modeling and strategy management capabilities.” Gartner added, “Ultimately, these solutions help CFOs and other business leaders orchestrate organizational performance and manage strategy in a more controlled and transparent manner.”1

Gartner evaluates and scores software vendors by examining a range of factors, including product capabilities, product strategy, market understanding (“to give due credit to a product vision that serves the office of finance and the organization as a whole”) and customer satisfaction. Gartner assessed 16 different vendors for this Magic Quadrant.

Mature offerings that meet market demand

In its findings, Gartner observed that Leaders in this Magic Quadrant not only provide mature offerings that meet market demand but also have demonstrated the vision necessary to sustain their market position as requirements evolve. In addition, Gartner identified the hallmark of Leaders: Their degree of focus on, and investment in, their offerings allows them not only to lead the market but also to affect its overall direction. As a result, according to Gartner, for those who are trying to understand how new market offerings might evolve, Leaders can be among the vendors to watch.

IBM believes its place in this newly defined category is based primarily on two products: the on-premises IBM Cognos TM1 solution and its cloud-based counterpart, IBM Planning Analytics. Having associated itself with forward-looking thought leaders in the performance management space for many years, the IBM team is enormously pleased to be recognized in this way by one of the world’s top analyst organizations. What’s more, it plans to keep leading the way for many years to come.
