IBM Data Science Elite team helps Niagara Bottling acquire skills for the company's journey to AI

Creative & Editorial Lead, Data & AI, Cloud, IBM

Niagara Bottling, the largest supplier of private label bottled water in the US, is working with the IBM Data Science Elite team to build out a highly specialized set of skills around data science and machine learning to tackle a variety of projects in the organization.

Sreesha Rao, senior manager of IT applications at Niagara Bottling and Seth Dobrin, CDO of IBM Analytics, spoke with Dave Vellante in NYC on the eve of the 13 September taping of the Win with AI digital broadcast about the company’s efforts to save on plastic use by optimizing the settings of its pallet wrappers, machines that wrap an entire pallet stacked with cases of bottles in multiple revolutions of stretch plastic. The IBM Data Science Elite team is working with Niagara on a model that could predict the risk of film breakage for given equipment settings.

"Adopting data science is not that easy. It requires subject matter expertise. It requires understanding of data science itself, the tools and techniques,” Rao says. “IBM brought that as part of the Data Science Elite team. They brought both the tools and expertise so we could get on that journey towards AI."
