September 20, 2013 | 2:00 pm ET | 31:30

Open-source software has arguably had the largest impact on the big data movement, and at the forefront of that is Hadoop and R. Our expert panelists discussed the effect that open source software is having in the business world, including the true cost of "free" software, the importance and feasibility of open source standards, and the impact of data scientist "crowd sourced" communities. Panelists were Eric Kavanagh (@eric_kavanagh), CEO of The Bloor Group and host of the weekly webcast “The Briefing Room” and Information Management's DM Radio; David Smith (@revodavid), data scientist, blogger and evangelist for R technology at Revolution Analytics; and Tom Deutsch (@thomasdeutsch), program director for big data and analytics at IBM, and co-author of two books on big data.
